The Creative Technologist
A creative technologist brings creativity to technical functions and technicality to creative ones.
Creative technology means leaning into the creativity available in technology. The creative technologist is the person who does that work inside an organization: the one who can stand in both rooms and help each one understand the other.
How creative technologists show up
In two directions at once:
- Creativity into technical functions. They bring imagination, storytelling and design thinking to systems, tools and processes that are usually treated as purely technical.
- Technicality into creative functions. They bring structure, tooling and a working knowledge of what technology can actually do to teams that make ideas, content and experiences.
What problems they solve
- Communication gaps across teams. They bridge the gaps that open between departments that use different words for the same thing.
- Internal and external communication. What a company says to its own people and what it says to the world, made to line up. See internal communications.
- Language as a tool. They treat words as working equipment: the right term, defined plainly, is what gets a decision made.
- Non-technical teammates talking with technical teams. They give people outside engineering and IT the language to ask for what they need, and to understand what they get back. See ICT.
- Auditing and understanding tools. They find out what a company's tools really do, what overlaps, what is unused and what is missing, before anyone buys more. See the tools assessment.
- Neurodivergence and polymathic thinking, leaned into. They treat minds that connect across fields as an advantage to design for, not a difference to manage around.
How they do it
- Translate first. Before any tool changes, they get each team describing the problem in words the other team understands.
- Audit before adding. They map the tools already in place and how they are actually used.
- Prototype in the open. Small working examples that both technical and non-technical people can react to. See creative innovation.
- Design for different minds. Instructions, meetings and documents built to work for more than one way of thinking. See systems planning.
Where they do it
- In-house, on teams that produce work continuously and need someone to keep creative and technical people moving together.
- Agencies, usually in senior, client-facing roles.
- Fractionally: a senior creative technologist on a part-time, ongoing basis, sitting with the leadership team without a full-time hire.
- Consultancies, brought in for a defined change: a new system, a rebrand, a merger of teams.
- Freelance, by the project.
The fractional creative technologist
Most organizations do not need a creative technologist forty hours a week. They need one in the room when decisions about tools, language and teams are being made. A fractional creative technologist works that way: a few days a month, as part of leadership, for as long as the change takes.

When to hire one
- When your technical and non-technical teams keep talking past each other, and projects stall in translation.
- When you have more tools than anyone can explain, or you are about to buy another one.
- When what you tell your staff and what you tell your customers have drifted apart.
- When you want to bring neurodivergent and polymathic people into the center of the work, and need someone who knows how.
When not to: if the need is a single build with a clear spec, hire a specialist developer or designer instead.
Job prospects
Demand is rising: US searches for "creative technologist" went from about 760 a month in 2024 to 1,300–1,600 a month in 2026. The title is still loosely defined. In one industry survey only 22% of creative technologists said their job matched what they were hired for. That gap is why this page exists.
